1. PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana

Government Support for Residential Rooftop Solar

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a Government of India initiative designed to encourage residential households to adopt grid-connected rooftop solar systems.

Eligible households can receive Central Financial Assistance (CFA) through the applicable government process, subject to scheme guidelines, installation requirements, and verification.

Understand the Standard Residential Subsidy Structure

Rooftop solar capacityStandard subsidy illustration
1 kW₹30,000
2 kW₹60,000
3 kW₹78,000
Above 3 kWUp to ₹78,000 under the standard structure

Please note: These are the widely published standard subsidy amounts. As government provisions can be revised, the final applicable amount should be confirmed through the current official scheme guidelines before publication or quotation.

For eligible residential consumers in certain special-category states and Union Territories, different subsidy rates may apply.

What Does the Subsidy Mean for Your Home?

Government financial assistance can reduce the effective cost of an eligible rooftop solar installation. However, the subsidy is not a universal upfront discount: eligibility, installation, verification, and disbursement requirements must be fulfilled.

Sky FinCorp helps you understand the process and coordinate the relevant documentation.

2. Eligibility

Who Is Eligible for Solar Subsidy?

Eligibility is determined by the current PM Surya Ghar scheme rules. Generally, applicants should review the following requirements:

Eligibility Requirements to Review

  • The applicant must have an eligible residential electricity connection.
  • The rooftop solar installation must meet the applicable scheme requirements.
  • The system and equipment must comply with the relevant technical and programme conditions.
  • The applicant must complete the prescribed registration, application, and verification procedures.
  • Any restrictions relating to previously received solar subsidies or other eligibility conditions must be satisfied.

Please note: Commercial and industrial electricity connections are not automatically eligible for this residential subsidy programme.

Documents You May Need

Depending on the application and financing route, the following information may be required:

  • Electricity consumer number and latest electricity bill.
  • Registered mobile number and applicant details.
  • Bank account details and supporting bank documentation.
  • Identity and address proof, where requested.
  • Rooftop solar application and installation details.
  • Additional documents requested by the DISCOM or financing institution.

The exact documentation depends on the current scheme procedure and the lender's requirements.

3. Solar Financing Options

Your Solar System, with a More Manageable Upfront Cost

Paying the entire installation cost at once may not suit every household. Financing can help eligible customers spread the cost over a repayment period.

Sky FinCorp can help you understand the financial components of your project and explore available options through participating financing institutions.

Option A

Self-Financed Solar

Pay for the system from your own funds.

May suit you if:

  • You prefer not to take a loan.
  • You have funds available for the installation.
  • You want to avoid loan interest and repayment obligations.

Option B

Solar Loan

Finance an eligible portion of the installation through a participating bank or financing institution.

May suit you if:

  • You prefer to preserve your savings.
  • You want to distribute the initial cost across monthly instalments.
  • You meet the lender's eligibility and credit assessment requirements.

Loan approval, interest rate, tenure, charges, and repayment conditions are determined by the lender.

Option C

Eligible Government-Supported Solar Financing

Government announcements dated July 2026 describe collateral-free rooftop solar financing through nationalized banks at a concessional rate of repo rate plus 50 basis points, stated as 5.75% per annum at that time, with a 10-year tenure.

The rate is time-sensitive, and eligibility and availability depend on current scheme provisions and participating lenders. Customers should verify the current offer before applying.

4. Calculate Your Solar Investment

Example: 3 kW Rooftop Solar System

Consider an illustrative residential solar project with a quotation of ₹2,00,000.

Cost after subsidy

Cost componentIllustrative amount
Total project cost₹2,00,000
Assumed approved subsidy₹78,000
Indicative cost after subsidy₹1,22,000

This illustration assumes the full standard subsidy is approved and received. It is not a guaranteed quotation or subsidy entitlement.

What if you finance the remaining cost?

If a lender approves a loan of ₹1,22,000, your repayment will depend on the interest rate, tenure, and loan terms. For example, at an illustrative interest rate of 5.75% per annum over 10 years:

ParticularsIllustrative amount
Loan amount₹1,22,000
Annual interest rate5.75%
Repayment tenure10 years
Estimated monthly EMIApproximately ₹1,340
Total repayments over 10 yearsApproximately ₹1.61 lakh

These calculations assume a standard reducing-balance EMI loan, a constant interest rate, and no additional charges. They are not a bank offer or loan approval.

Important: The timing of subsidy disbursement matters. You may need to arrange the initial project payment or financing before the subsidy is credited. Confirm the payment sequence with the relevant scheme authority and lender.

5. Understand Your Potential Electricity Bill Savings

Solar Is an Investment in Your Energy Future

A properly sized rooftop solar system can reduce the amount of electricity you purchase from the grid. The actual financial benefit depends on how much energy the system generates and how much of that energy your household consumes.

Your potential savings depend on:

  • Monthly electricity consumption.
  • Local electricity tariffs and billing rules.
  • Solar system capacity and generation.
  • Roof direction, shading, and installation quality.
  • Daytime electricity usage and export compensation rules.
  • System maintenance and financing costs.

Solar does not automatically eliminate every electricity bill. Fixed charges, minimum charges, imported electricity, and other billing components may still apply.

How we help you plan: Sky FinCorp can help you compare the estimated project cost, potential subsidy, expected generation, and financing obligations so you can evaluate the investment more clearly.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions, Answered

How much subsidy can I receive for a 3 kW solar system?

The standard published residential subsidy structure provides ₹78,000 for an eligible 3 kW system, subject to the current scheme guidelines and successful approval.

Can I receive subsidy for a system larger than 3 kW?

Under the standard structure, the central subsidy is capped at ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW or larger. Applicable provisions should be confirmed for your specific case.

Is a solar loan available without collateral?

Eligible applicants may have access to collateral-free financing through participating banks under the applicable government-supported arrangements. Approval is not automatic.

Can I get the subsidy before installing solar panels?

You should not assume that the subsidy will be paid in advance. The applicable process generally involves registration, installation, and the required verification steps before disbursement.

How long does subsidy processing take?

Processing depends on application accuracy, installation completion, verification, and the relevant authorities. No specific processing period can be guaranteed.

Can I use a loan to pay for the installation?

Potentially, yes. This depends on the lender's eligible project financing structure, the approved amount, and the payment process.

Does Sky FinCorp guarantee loan approval?

No. The bank or financing institution makes the final lending decision.

Will my electricity bill become zero?

Not necessarily. Your bill depends on consumption, solar generation, applicable tariffs, fixed charges, and the rules governing electricity imports and exports.

Can commercial establishments receive the same residential subsidy?

The residential PM Surya Ghar subsidy is not automatically available to commercial or industrial consumers. Separate schemes or financing arrangements may apply.
